Coming from the small town of Avola of the eastern part of the island of Sicily. Literally translated this means the ‘black of Avola’, which refers to the colour and strength of this red variety. This Sicilian variety is only planted throughout the island and a very small part in Argentina, almost nowhere else in the world! Which makes this grape quite unique. It is often compared to other varieties like Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon but develops its own identity with aromas like tobacco and firm spiced plums. The best Nero d’Avola is found around the township of Noto. It most famous synonym is Calabrese.

Aromas
Spicy aromas like black pepper, dried green herbs, coffee, black tea, and sweet tobacco. The fruit characters we find have notes of black plums, dark cherries, blackberries.

Colour
Medium to dark ruby red

Food matching
The wine has a structure of firm fruit characters and bold tannins. That way it needs to be matched with a dish just as bold and firm, like anything with red meat, especially beef casseroles, but also slow braised lamb.
